Mong Ton HPP is to be built in the middle section of the Thanlwin in Myanmar Union. The dam site is about 19 km upstream from Wan Hsa La Village, 316 km east of Taunggyi and 260 km away from Chiang Mai. With an average annual discharge of 2,776m3/s, the dam site controls a drainage area of 183,000 km2. The normal pool level is EL 395m and the total storage capacity is 39.3 billion m3, while the height of the dam is 241m. The power plant has an installed capacity of 7,000 MW, and an average annual energy production of 35 billion kw·h.
The MOU on the development of the Mong Ton HPP was signed between the Ministry of Electric Power of Myanmar and the investors on November 10, 2010 in Nay Pyi Taw.
